ICON System Accessory Packages:

Accessory Module

The first step in making a great water heater even better is the installation of the Accessory Module. All of the accessory packages are powered and controlled by the Accessory Module (wall outlet required). The module incorporates a multi-color LED status indicator that monitors the accessory packages. This same display also offers diagnostic codes that signal leak detection, inlet shut-off valve status and a control fault. The module also features an audible alarm that is activated if a leak is detected and is de-activated if a leak has been corrected. A mute feature is included to silence the alarm at the touch of a button.

Protection Package - Leak Detection

Want to help avoid water damage in the event of a piping or tank leak? The Protection Package has just what the customer ordered! It features an electronic sensor that attaches to the base of the water heater and, in the event of a leak, triggers the audible alarm integrated in the Accessory Module. For additional protection, the sensor will send a signal to the Accessory Module which in turn, interrupts burner operation in the event of a prolonged leak. This ensures that the chance of heating a less than full, or even empty tank, is prevented. Once corrected, the Accessory Module re-sets both the leak detection sensor and gas valve so normal water heating can take place*. The sensor can be mounted inside a drain pan if one is installed. If there is no drain pan, the Protection Package comes complete with a rubber dam which is installed around the base of the heater. The dam will hold enough water to activate the sensor and alarm in the event of a leak.

Inlet Shut-Off Valve Package - Automatic Cold Water Shut-Off

If your customer prefers a level of leak protection beyond the audible alarm, the Inlet Shut-Off Valve Package is the solution. Imagine what could happen if your customer is away from home when a leak occurs and no one can hear the alarm. The Inlet Shut-Off Valve Package eliminates those fears by closing off the cold water inlet when a leak is detected and confirmed. Once corrected, the Accessory Module opens the shut-off valve, allowing water to enter the tank so normal water heating can take place*. The Inlet Shut-Off Valve Package mounts directly to the water heater, or at any point up stream of the water heater, and features an integral wire harness for easy connection.

Performance Package: LCD Digital Control and Integrated Mixing Device

ENERGY SAVINGS FULLY PROGRAMMABLE LCD DIGITAL CONTROLHere's your opportunity to offer your customers enhanced hot water delivery plus greatly increased energy efficiency! The Performance Package offers full 7-day, 4 period/day (wake, leave, return, sleep) programmable control of the water heater giving homeowners the ability to adjust the set point temperature of the water stored in the tank based on their usage patterns. Water is maintained at the optimum temperature when it will most likely be needed. There's also a setback feature, that with one push of a button, lowers the set point temperature to save energy while the homeowner is out of town or when hot water is not required for an extended amount of time. The control also allows water to be stored at its highest set point temperature during peak demand hours. This greatly reduces the homeowner's wait time for hot water at the fixtures in the morning. The control, with its LCD user interface, is similar to a home heating and cooling thermostat and features a hot water capacity indicator, a read out of set point water temperature, diagnostic display codes for installation and troubleshooting, and a battery back-up (up to 30 days). The control can save the homeowner up to 36% on energy usage depending on the geographic region, hot water usage and number of people in the household. This easily installed control can be attached directly to the water heater with the mounting bracket provided or it can be mounted remotely. Simply put, the control allows your customers to program the water heater to operate only during those times hot water is required thereby saving energy and money.

ENHANCED HOT WATER DELIVERY INTEGRATED MIXING DEVICEThe second major component of the Performance Package is the uniquely engineered integrated mixing device (IMD). The IMD allows water in the tank to be stored at a higher temperature while still providing a comfortable outlet temperature. By blending cold water into the hot water outlet, usable hot water can be increased by as much as 50% or more. Multiple time-saving features are incorporated into the IMD. The first is a 1/4" NPT cold water port that can be used in place of a saddle valve when connecting an ice maker. There is also an alternate 1/2" NPT hot water outlet that can be used for a dishwasher, washing machine or other high temperature application. The IMD features a 1/2" NPT recirculation port as well. This eliminates any confusion regarding where to make the connection when installing a recirculation line. Simple to operate, the IMD is factory set at approximately 120°F and features a clearly marked, push-to-turn hand wheel that helps prevent accidental temperature change. Engineered for convenience, the IMD reduces mixing valve installation time from the normal one hour to as little as 15 minutes. An adhesive Thermo-Strip is also included to approximate the mixed hot water outlet temperature. The Thermo-Strip also helps reduce the time required to set the outlet temperature by eliminating the need to run water at a faucet in order to check the temperature.

Setback Control Package: LCD Digital Control

Here's your opportunity to offer your customers enhanced hot water delivery plus greatly increased energy efficiency! The Setback Control Package offers full 7-day, 4 period/day (wake, leave, return, sleep) programmable control of the water heater giving homeowners the ability to adjust the set point temperature of the water stored in the tank based on their usage patterns. Water is maintained at the optimum temperature when it will most likely be needed. Simply put, the control allows your customers to program the water heater to operate only during those times hot water is required thereby saving energy and money.

How the Defender Safety System Works

During normal operation, air for combustion is drawn into the water heater through the opening in the jacket. This air travels down and around the combustion chamber and enters through holes in the very bottom of the corrosion-resistant combustion chamber. The air then travels up through the oriented flame arrestor plate louvers, where the velocity of the air is increased and its direction altered. The air then mixes in a normal manner with the supplied gas and is efficiently combusted, producing very low NOx emissions.

In the case where trace amounts of flammable vapors are present in the air flowing into the combustion chamber, the burner or pilot flame harmlessly ignites the vapors. If flammable vapors are in sufficient quantity to prevent normal combustion the burner and pilot flame is shut down. Should the flammable vapors continue to the burner, the flame arrestor plate prevents the flames from traveling backwards and igniting vapors outside of the combustion chamber. The calibrated, multipurpose thermal switch recognizes this and shuts down the pilot and main burner. This switch also deactivates the burner and pilot in the unlikely event of restricted airflow caused by severe lint, dust or oil accumulation on the arrestor plate.

For years, water heater designs proved themselves safe and reliable when installed, used and maintained properly. Unfortunately, occasional accidents were caused by the improper use and storage of flammable-vapor producing liquids near gas-fired appliances, such as water heaters and other common household appliances. To address this issue, a group of water heater manufacturers came together, in cooperation with the Consumer Products Safety Commission, to form the Joint Research and Development Consortium. The goal of this alliance was to develop technologies for gas-fired water heaters that would resist igniting flammable vapors that result from the mishandling of gasoline and other flammable products.

This ongoing, voluntary industry-approach to developing FVIR technologies calls for manufacturers to invest their own resources in new product designs and the methods to test them. The resulting efforts capitalize on the industry's extensive product and applications expertise.

What is FVIR?

Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistance is a technology developed for gas-fired water heaters that resists ignition of flammable vapors that may occur outside and in close proximity to a water heater as a result of the mishandling of flammable products.
